India and Sri Lanka, cooperation in technology for development

For the first time in their history, the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, (IESL), and the Institute of Engineers, India, (IEI) jointly organized a seminar. The seminar was on: "Co-operation in Technology for Development" and was held on September 1st & 2nd, 2001 in Chennai. It was organized by the IEI Tamil Nadu Centre. Eminent Engineers from both countries presented papers at the seminar.

The Chief Guest at the seminar was R. Jayasinghe, Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Chennai. Delivering his speech, he said, I take this opportunity to convey my appreciation of the two Institutions for organizing this seminar which, I believe, is a timely organized one, particularly in the back-drop of emerging new technological development the world over.

On the cooperation in technology for development agenda between our two countries, a step in this direction has been a long pending event, as we need to develop concrete measures in making a headway in different technological fields.

Our gathering here has a unique bond that holds us together. We have commonalities in our culture and traditions, and there are a lot more similarities in our people. Religious beliefs, styles of living, our thinking are all the more similar. Against such a compatible and adaptable background. I do not foresee any major obstacle that may stand in our way in cooperation for development in technology or any other areas for that matter, between our two countries.

Let me apprise you of some recent developments that have taken place between our two countries, particularly with the Southern Indian States. Our professionals in the field of medicine have established firm roots in their cooperation through constant programs and activities. We have witnessed that regular interactions and program are being arranged between our two countries for the development of the health sector. We have deep rooted relations in our culture. Exchanging cultural programs and related activities have become very frequent and the cooperation in this field has been highly encouraging. Our two countries have already established cooperation in the fields of trade and commerce, journalism, sports, youth training programs, education, and the film industry. These are all positive indications in mutual cooperation leading towards enhanced future activities for the common benefit of our people.

Amidst these developments, organizing a high level seminar of this nature in promoting and exploring the new potential for cooperation in various fields of technology will certainly push us towards our common objectives of the economic and social upliftment of our people".
