Golden Jubilee of Habib Bank

Habib Bank Limited, Colombo (HBL) celebrated its 50th anniversary in Sri Lanka recently. Habib Bank Limited, a state owned Bank of Pakistan established in 1941, opened its first overseas branch in Sri Lanka in 1951 at Keyzer Street Pettah and subsequently based its Main Branch in 1985 at 140-142 Second Cross Street, Colombo 11.

HBL has the largest network in the Asia Pacific Region and branches in Europe and the USA. In year 2000 the Bank's consolidated position declared a profit of PakRs. 1,074 billion, while the deposit base grew to PakRs. 265 million versus PakRs. 251 billion in 1999 an increase of 5,55% compared to 3.5% growth for the Banking industry as a whole. The Bank itself has a definitive client focus with a view to attaining greater customer satisfaction and an extensive branch network is being maintained and continual efforts are being made to reinvest customer needs and improve customer services, a bank release said.

HBL Management at Sri Lanka, in conformity with the overall bank's policy recognises that well trained and motivated personnel are critical to the Banks ability to maximise its potential. There is continuous emphasis on enhancing employee skills by exposing staff to various IT training programs and other areas related to Banking under the guidance of recognised institutes and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka's centre for Banking studies.

Operating in a fully computerised environment it has a domestic unit branch at Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo 3 and Foreign Currency Banking Unit at Liberty Plaza Colombo, HBL has its plans to expand the branches together to serve its customers with more effective and dedicated services in the future, the release said.
