Yemen to return 116 Sri Lankans on illegal ships

ADEN, Thursday (Reuters)

Yemen plans to deport by air 116 Sri Lankan passengers on two vessels that entered Aden port illegally last month, a port official said on Wednesday.

Captain Mohammad Mubarak said the cost of the repatriation of the Sri Lankans, estimated at $80,000, will be shouldered by the port until a local court issues a ruling in a case by the port against the vessels' owners.

The port had asked the captains of the Ukrainian- and Sri Lankan-flagged vessels to contact the ships' owners to provide alternative transport for the Sri Lankans because neither ship was equipped to carry passengers safely.

The captains of the vessels, who have refused to disclose their destinations, were on trial for entering the port illegally, the official said.

It was not clear if the vessels, which originated from a Sri Lankan port, had been trying to smuggle the men to another country.
