CB appoints past cricketers to develop national squads Three former Sri Lanka cricketers have been given appointments by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) interim committee in their aim to further develop crucial aspects of the country's cricket. Former fast bowler Champaka Ramanayake has been appointed the new specialised fast bowling coach replacing Rumesh Ratnayake who has taken up an appointment with the Asian Cricket Council. Ramanayake was understudy to Ratnayake and his appointment took effect from September 1. Another former fast bowler Pramodya Wickremasinghe will be Ramanayake's understudy. Wickremasinghe is presently at the MRF Foundation in Madras undergoing training under former Australia fast bowler Dennis Lillee. Former all-rounder Ruwan Kalpage has been appointed the specialised fielding coach also with effect from September 1. A Cricket Board release states that this is the first time a permanent fielding coach has been appointed by them. "Many other Test-playing nations have already recognised the importance of fielding with similar appointments. Kalpage's appointment underscores the importance that fielding plays in the game today," the release states. Kalpage underwent training with Trevor Chappell, when the former Australian cricketer was in Sri Lanka on a coaching stint as fielding coach during the 1999 World Cup. He returned from Australia two weeks ago after completing the Level II Course in Coaching. The third appointment is that of Roshan Mahanama who becomes the head coach of the Sri Lanka 'A' team and the development squad with effect from September 15. Mahanama will be working closely with the national coach of the Sri Lanka 'A' team Hemantha Devapriya, who is expected to take charge of the national under 17 squad. The Sri Lanka 'A' team is due to take part in a triangular competition with the 'A' teams of India and Pakistan in Sharjah next month. They are also scheduled to tour south India for the annual Gopalan trophy fixture in the same month. - [S.T.] |
