Bogambara Stadium comes in for praise The facilities and ground conditions at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy came in for high praise from the international rugby experts, commentators and the participating overseas teams during last weekend's Singer Sri Lankan International Sevens in the hill capital. Despite the severe drought experienced in the country, which led to a acute power crisis, the staff at the Bogambara Stadium were able to provide greenish ground for the 15-nation event. Even the players' dressing rooms and the media enclosure were newly done at a cost of Rs. Seven million under stage two of the development project. These ideal conditions were commended by many knowledgable at the venue. Once the third and final stage of the Bogambara Stadium is completed soon, the venue could boast of being one of the best rugby stadiums in Asia. Bogambara Stadium is managed by the Sugathadasa Stadium Sports Authority, which also manage the Sugathadasa indoor and outdoor stadiums, Sugathadasa swimming pool, Premadasa stadium and Dambulla International Stadium. Many international cricketers, including cricketer turned commentator Tony Greig commended the facilities at the Premadasa Stadium during the recent Triangular and Test series in Sri Lanka. The Ministry of Sports had invested large sums of money for the development of infrastructure facilities, including the Bogambara Stadium. Former Sports Minister Lakshman Kiriella and the chairman of the Sugathadasa Sports Stadium Authority, Group captain Tikiri Marambe should be commended for the job well done. Their efforts have helped Sri Lanka to keep up their international image both in the fields of cricket and rugby. - (D.W.) |
