'Duty of Opposition to support Government on national issues'

It is the duty of the Opposition parties to give their fullest co-operation to the government in a wider sense in solving problems that affect the whole country.

Ports, Shipping, and Fisheries Minister Mahinda Rajapakse observed there views at the opening of 32nd Diyawara Gammanaya in Kataragama on Sundays.

Minister Mahinda Rajapakse further said that the people have voted not only to the governing party but to the opposition parties also therefore it is their duty to help the government in a national crisis.

The target was to build 64 Diyawara Gammana, now already 28 have been vested with the people. But now we have decided to raise the number from 64 to 100 said, the Minister.

Minister Rajapakse said that the LTTE attacked Kataragama depot and Katunayake airport. Recently there was a terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in America. So all the political leaders must join hands to eliminate the terrorism from Sri Lanka soil.

When America was attacked by the terrorists, the media acted with responsibility. The dead bodies were not shown as those scenes will upset the minds of the younger generation. No figures of the dead were given. But the Americans, shedding all the differences discuss a solution to this matter whereas in Sri Lanka opposition parties point out the finger at the government after the attack on Katunayake international airport, he said.

The minister said the government acted with great responsibility to supply drought aid to the people in drought stricken areas in Hambantota district.

On a request made by Jagath Pushpakumara the minister promised to release forty eight lakhs and fifty thousand rupees to supply the electricity to this village.

Chairman of the Pelwatte Sugar Company, A. P. Jagath Pushpakumara said that this was the first duty of Minister Rajapakse after he took over the new ministry.
