Global terrorism should be eradicated - Prime Minister

by Ananda Kannangara.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake yesterday stressed the importance of eradicating global terrorism and said that most countries including Sri Lanka and China are focusing their attention on this crucial issue.

He made these observations at a conference held at the SLFI auditorium in Colombo to coincide with the 52nd anniversary celebrations of the Peoples' Republic of China. Chinese ambassador Jiang Zinzheng presided at the meeting sponsored by the Association for Sri Lanka China Social and Cultural co-operation (ASLCSCC)

Mr. Wickremanayake said: "Sri Lanka and China have a long friendship since the great Chinese priest Fa Hien visited ancient Ceylon. This friendship was further cherished during the third century BC when Chinese people came here for trade activities.

He said "In the recent times the friendship between these two countries further developed under the leadership of Former Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike and Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike."

Mr. Jiang Zinzheng said: "The friendship between our two countries will be further strengthened under a number of cultural programs already launched by us with the assistance of young Sri Lankans and Chinese."

Around 300 schoolchildren who won essay competitions were also presented with certificates.

Media Deputy Minister Alavi Mowlana, ASLCSCC, President R. W. Piyasena and ASLCSCC Secretary, Indrananda Abeysekara were also present.
