The Government yesterday referred the 17th Amendment Bill to the Supreme Court for determination on its constitutionality. A Bench comprising Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC, P. Edussuriya and Hector S. Yapa will meet today to consider the Bill. The state will be represented by the Attorney General. Court will also hear representations if any of those contesting the Bill which has been considered as Bill of National Importance by the Cabinet. The passage of the Bill known as the 17th Amendment to the Constitution will set up the Independent Commissions for the Police, Public Service, Elections and Judiciary. The Supreme Court determination would be communicated to the Speaker. |
