Clifford Cup rugby from September 20 to 30

The eight leading rugby clubs in the country will battle it out for the richest prize in club rugby - the prestigious Clifford Cup in the Caltex Inter-Club Knock-out Rugby Tournament which will be worked off from September 20 to 30 at Nittawela and Longden Place.

Defending champions Kandy Sports Club which has dominated the tournament during the last decade will go all out to clinch the rugby double by winning the Clifford Cup having already clinched the Caltex 'A' division league rugby title. Kandy SC first clinched the Clifford Cup in 1992 under the leadership of Ananda Kasturiarachchi and since then they have bagged the trophy in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2000. League champions Kandy SC will confront home town rivals Kandy Youth SC in the curtain raiser of the tournament on September 20 at Nittawela. On the following day CR and FC will take on Police at Longden Place.

In the 'A' Division League CR won the first round game 11-7 while Police won the return match 12-9. The Sri Lanka Army which is enjoying its best season in recent years will clash with Sri Lanka Navy in the third quarter-final on September 22 at the same venue. Two evenly matched teams CH and FC and Havelocks will battle it out in the fourth quarter-final on September 23 at Longden Place. CH won both matches in the 'A' division league by 30-13 and 29-22.

The semi-finals will be played on September 25 and 27 at Nittawela and Longden Place respectively with the final scheduled for September 30 at either Nittawela or Longden Place.

Last year Kandy SC retained the Clifford Cup with a resounding 39-12 win over Sri Lanka Army in the final having edged out CR and FC by 21-18 in the 1999 final.

Quarter-finals:

(a) Kandy SC vs Kandy Youths on September 20 (Thursday) at Nittawela. (b) CR and FC vs Police on September 21 (Friday) at Longden Place.

(c) Army vs Navy on September 22 (Saturday) at Longden Place.

(d) CH and FC vs Havelocks on September 23 (Sunday) at Longden Place.

Semi-finals:

(e) Winners of (a) vs winners of (b) on September 25 (Tuesday) at Nittawela.

(f) Winners of (c) vs winners of (d) on September 27 (Thursday) at Longden Place.

Finals:

Winners of (e) vs winners of (f) on September 30 (Sunday) at either Nittawela or Longden Place. (R.S.)
