Thondaman sworn-in Nuwara Eliya District Member of Parliament, Arumugam Thondaman was sworn-in yesterday as the Minister of Livestock Development and Estate infrastructure before President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the President's House. Media Secretary President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday re-appointed veteran media personality Janadasa Peiris as Secretary, Ministry of Media. Mr. Peiris is also the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. H. C. Peiris passes away The death occurred in Singapore of H. C. Peiris. He was best known for his innovative contributions towards the development of agriculture and the modernisation of the plantation sector in particular. He owned large extents of well-managed Coconut, Rubber and Tea estates which were widely recognised as showpieces of our plantation industry prior to the nationalisation of estates. From the mid 1950's till his retirement he was on the boards of several leading companies. At the time of his death, he remained Chairman of his family business known as the Yahala House Companies. He had a deep and abiding interest in veteran cars of which he had a rare collection. In fact he pioneered the Veteran Car Movement in Sri Lanka. He was the first Founder President of the Veteran Car Club in 1952 which is the oldest Veteran Car Club in Asia. 25,000 families in Puttalam hit by drought Around 25,000 families in Puttalam district are affected by the prevailing drought, and each distressed family is given dry rations each month to the value of Rs. 1,200 said Puttalam district secretary Mr. Jayalath Ravi W. Dissanayake in an interview with the Daily News. Relief assistance is provided by the social services ministry and NGO's, in co-ordination with the co-operative societies. Potable water is distributed by bowsers to needy families who cannot procure water, without any interruption. The villages affected are: Thammannagama, Manaweriya and Sirimbiadiya from the divisional secretariat area, Puttalam the villages of Mangala Eliya, Mampuri, Kottantivu and Tharakudivillu from the DS area in Mundel, Morapathana, Eluwankulam and Katu Eluwankulam in the DS area, Wanatavilluwa and Kivula, in the Maha Kumbukkadawala divisional secretariat. Dry rations and water collected by the churches, mosques and kovils are also channelled to afflicted families in their hour of adversity and misfortune. Mission to drought areas The Chief Sanghanayake of Siyane Sivu Korale and Viharadhipati of Attanagalla Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Dr. Pannila Ananda Thera led a team of volunteers on a humanitarian mission to provide assistance to drought stricken people in Tanamalwila, Kavantissagama, Sellawagama, Lunugamvehera areas in Hambantota district last weekend. The team carried 20 lorry loads of dry rations, water cans, coconuts, clothing, milk powder and other sundry items. Goods valued over Rs. 7 lakhs were collected from residents of Attanagalla area by the dayake sabha with the assistance of other voluntary organisations under the guidance of the thera. The mission included Venerable Pinnawala Somananda Thera, Venerable Kurawalane Siri Seevali Thera, Western Provincial Agriculture Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Provincial Councillors, Ranjith Ananda Rupasinghe and Sanjaya Siriwardena and members of the Viharaya's dayake sabha. The team visited Pilimahela, Padikepuhela, Kavantissagama, Situlpawwa Sellawagama, Lunugamvehera, Tanamalwila and Yala villages. Kirivehera Raja Maha Viharadhipathi Venerable Aluthwewa Soratha Thera with the assistance of Grama Niladaris of the area co-ordinated the distribution of food and other items. |
