by L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy Japanese Youth Delegate Miss. Nonaka Asuka observed that Sri Lanka was a lovely country and that the country was safe not only to spend a holiday but also to live in. There was no reason to have any fear to visit Sri Lanka and live there. After her return to Japan their organisation would carry that message to the people of Japan through their literature. Miss. Nonka Asuka visited Sri Lanka as a voluntary worker to work for the benefit of rural people in Sri Lanka with the Gemi Seva Foundation Kandy, and she spent nearly three months with rural people in remote villages in Kandyan areas. She made those observations at a farewell ceremony organised for her by the Gemi Seva Padanama, Kandy. The president of the Foundation, Karunaratne Galkotuwa presided. Miss. Asuka added that Sri Lanka was a beautiful country and that Sri Lankan culture could be highly appreciated. "Some foreigners are frightened to visit Sri Lanka. But we did not have any fear to live in this lovely country with these kind people. We have been implementing the Asia Youth Exchange Programme of Japan with the Gemi Seva Foundation in Kandy, Sri Lanka, under which nearly about 380 Japanese university students visit Sri Lanka every year. They live and work with rural people in and around Kandy to help rural people. They leave for Japan after their work very reluctantly because they live here very happily," she added. She said that after her return to Japan the Japanese Asia Youth Exchange Programme, would publish through their News Bulletins and literature that Sri Lanka was a safe place for any foreigner to live and there was no reason whatsoever for them to have any fear to visit Sri Lanka. She also paid her glowing tributes to the Gemi Seva Foundation Kandy, and its President, Karunaratne Galkotuwa for having given her and others of her delegation the chance to visit Sri Lanka and live and work with the people of this country. She will be returning to Sri Lanka once again in the year. 2003. |
