Finally, rain

Rain is expected within the next few days in the South West coastal areas and other sectors affected by the prevailing weather pattern, Meteorologist Ajith Wijemanne told the 'Daily News' yesterday.

He said that thunder showers can be expected in the Uva, Central, Sabaragamuwa and North Central provinces in the afternoon.

The showers are due to the activation of the tail end South West monsoon which failed.

Almost all the hydro catchment areas had received more than 10 mm rainfall during the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday. The highest rainfall of 50.5 mm was reported from Laxapana while 19.5 mm rainfall was reported from Randenigala, he added.

The other highest rainfall figures reported were 42.5 mm from Bandarawela, 36.6 mm from Nuwara Eliya, 32.2 mm from Trincomalee and 19.5 mm from Katugastota.

Reports from Hambantota said that some areas in the district received considerable rainfall on Sunday and Monday nights ending the months long drought in the district. There was no rain in the Hambantota town area despite the rain reported from the Ranna, Netolpitiya and Witharandeniya areas.
