US to take 'appropriate' action The United States Government will take "most appropriate action" against the 30 organisations it has identified as terrorist groups, US Embassy Media Spokesman Stephan Holgate told the Daily News yesterday. The groups were designated as foreign terrorist organisations on October 8, 1997 and included the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). "The US Government will go all out to combat global terrorism which has now become the most powerful threat to world peace," he said. The LTTE made several unsuccessful attempts on legal terms to get their organisation out from the proscribed list. Meanwhile, media reports said that Secretary of State Collin Powel on last Wednesday had also said that action will be taken against those listed 30 terrorist groups. The United Kingdom also proscribed the LTTE under the Anti- Terrorism Act in last February. |
