Pickpocket pays heavy price

An accused in a pickpocketing case was found guilty after trial and sentenced to six months rigorous imprisonment by Kandy Magistrate D.L.M. Seniviratne on Wednesday.

Sheriffdeen Mohamed Razik of Talwatte, Kandy was charged with the theft of Rs. 1000 belonging to W.M. Ratnayake of Pujapitiya and retaining the stolen money on July 3 this year.

According to police, on the day of the incident, Ratnayake was on his way to Army headquarters to collect the belongings of his soldier son who was killed in Jaffna last year. The theft had taken place in a bus and the stolen money was recovered from the suspect.

Sergeant W.A. Ananda of the Divisional Crime Detective Bureau, Kandy, who filed the plaint informed court that the accused was sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment suspended for 5 years in a theft case last year and he had committed this offence within the period of his suspended sentence.

The accused was also sentenced to one year RI as he had committed the same offence within the period of his suspended sentence.

Suspect further remanded

B.D. Sirisena of Dangolla, Kandy, who was on remand in connection with the murders of the wife and a daughter of Prof. Nimal Seniviratne of the Faculty of Engineering, Peradeniya University was further remanded by the Kandy Magistrate D.L.M. Seniviratne on Monday.

Prof. Seniviratne's 41 year old wife Amitha Kumari was found dead in her house at Fourth Lane at Deveni Rajasinghe Mawatha, Kandy and their 13 year old daughter Ransika Sakuni was found dead on admission to the Peradeniya teaching hospital on July 25.

Fifty-nine year old Sirisena, a former employee of the Peradeniya University is the domestic servant of Prof. Seniviratne.

When the case was called, sergeant S.M.K.B. Seniviratne of the Central Range Special Investigation Unit submitted a further reprot and said that police inquiries in this connection were still incomplete. He also moved that suspect be further remanded.

The Magistrate allowed the application and remanded the suspect till September 19.

Thirty five year old Ajantha Perera of 114/13B, Janatha Mawatha, Pathiragoda, Maharagama is suffering from a kidney disease.

Two bhikkus pass away in accident

Viharadhipathi of Jayasumanaramaya Trincomalee Ven.Minneriye Sumanatissa Thera and Viharadhipathi of Samanalapalama Rajamaha Viharaya Suriyapura Kantale Ven.Puliyarawatte Pannakitti Thera were killed in a motor accident on the Habarana-Trincomalee road on Tuesday.

Ven. Sumanatissa was the chief monk of the Trincomalee district and the patron of the SLFP Bhikku Association (SLFPBA) while Ven.Pannakitti was the Vice President of the SLFPBA.

The cremations will be held today evening in Trincomalee.

Ten years' RI fine in sex abuse case

The watcher of Kurunegala Maspotha Sri Sudarshana Maha Vidyalaya Herath Mudiyanselage Piyasena was sentenced to ten years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rupees 7,500 by the Kurunegala High Court Judge D.F.C. Lekamwasam.

He was found guilty of sexual abuse committed on a fourteen year old schoolgirl.

In this case the accused was indicted by the Attorney General with committing an unnatural offence on a fourteen year old school girl of the same school where the accused was a watcher in the year 1999.

Sumudu Wickramarachchi State Counsel in his submission on behalf of the Attorney General told court that the court has to deal with the accused under section 368 (A) of the amended section of the Ceylon Criminal Code number 22 of 1995 and deterrent punishment was necessary for similar offence.

Titus Manatunga attorney-at-law defended.

Sentenced to death

The death sentence was passed by Mrs. Silani Karunaratna High Court Judge, Balapitiya on an accused who killed another person on the spot by stabbing with a sharp weapon at Karandeniya in 1995.

The accused was Jayantha Serasinghe (38) of Deenasala, Karandeniya.

The deceased was Ilandarideva Liberty Nenasena (55) of Karandeniya who had thirteen cut and stab injuries.

According to the complaint filed by the Karandeniya police the accused and the deceased's son were engaged in a rice business throughout and an argument arose in connection with their rice business. The accused had stabbed his partners's father who went to solve the problem on 8th July 1995 in their native place in Karandeniya.

The plaint was conducted by Chethiya Gunasekara State Counsel and for Defendant, Samson Liyanage, Attorney-at-Law assigned Counsel.
