C. V. Gooneratne attempted assassination case: appeal dismissed The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction and the sentence imposed by the Panadura Provincial High Court on the accused in the C. V. Gooneratne attempted assassination and conspiracy and dismissed the appeal of the accused, said the Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Maxwell Paranagama on Wednesday in Court. The accused A. A. Don Ajith Kumara, A. A. Don Sarath, M. A. Mohamed Akram and H. Jagath Kumara of Dehiwala were produced in court. They were indicted by the Attorney General with the conspiracy to assassinate the late C. V. Gooneratne on October 19, 1994 at Panadura and with possessing weapons and committing an offence punishable under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. They were also indicted with aiding and abetting the attempted assassination. The case went for trial before the Panadura Provincial High Court Judge and all the accused were found guilty. The Judge sentenced each of the accused to seven years' rigorous imprisonment. The appeal came up for hearing before the Court of Appeal Judges Hector Seneviratne and P. H. K. Kulatilleke. Panadura Police visited the scene, Inspector Ajith Kumara arrested two suspects involved in the attack. ASP S. Dharmaratne is directing investigations. |
