Good demand for better teas The better teas received a good demand with appreciating values at this week's Tea Auction in Colombo, tea brokers said. "There was fairly widespread inquiry for the full bodied, bright invoices which were well absorbed at healthy levels, with the leading buyer of liquoring teas showing a little more enthusiasm than last week," John Keells Tea Brokers said. There was improved demand for Low Growns and the grades such as OPA and Pekoe, which were weaker last week, advanced several rupees. The Russian winter buying appears to be strengthening, which augurs well for certain grades that are desired by this out market. Buyers from Turkey bid strongly on Pekoes with the Select Best reaching premium levels including a record price of Rs. 295/-. Tippy grades were also much sought after, with FBOPs sometimes gaining Rs. 10/- to 15/-. There was an improved interest from shippers to the UK and Pakistan on a fair cross section of the better liquoring westerners while South Africa, Japan and the Continent appeared somewhat selective, Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers said. Low growns also recorded good prices, particularly in the latter part of the sale, they said. Although a few showers were experienced in some planting districts mostly dry weather conditions prevailed in most of the plantations throughout the week. |
