Handloom exhibition begins today

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake will open the Handloom Exhibition and Competition 2001 organised by the Western Province Industries Department at the National Art Gallery, Colombo at 10.00 am. today.

The exhibition will continue till September 17 from 10.00am to 6.00 pm daily. Several sales outlets will also be included enabling the public to purchase products at concessionary rates.

This is an annual event organised by the Department to promote the Sri Lankan handloom sector by providing market opportunities to a large number of producers in the province, a Western Province Industries and Tourism Ministry spokesman said.

Awards and cash prizes will also be offered to the best handloom products selected from the competition.

At present five sales outlets named " Crafts Lanka" have been established by the department in Kollupitiya, Malwatta Road, Colombo, Nugegoda, Kalutara and Bandaranaike International Air Port Katunayake to promote the local handlooms.

On the directions of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, a special project has been set up at Attanagalla to develop Sri Lankan handloom textiles to suit local and international market requirements. A large number of new creations will also be included to the exhibition, he added.
