Muslims protest against LTTE continues

The shops remained closed and transport services drew to a standstill as the Muslim community of Muttur took their protest against the LTTE into its fifth consecutive day yesterday, the Sri Lanka Army news centre reports.

The protest was triggered off when the burden of terrorist atrocities reached breaking point and led to a spontaneous chain of protests on September 6. Extortionism, demands for ransom and general harassment of the community have been rampant in this predominantly Muslim village to the south of Trincomalee over a long period. The reign of terror has resulted in the majority losing their livelihood.

In the Koneswaran Kovil area the Navy investigating a suspicious movement of boats was attacked by a hail of grenades.

The occupants of three boats jumped overboard and swam ashore.

All save one escaped. Navy personnel who towed the tree fibre glass dinghies ashore took the three outboard motors, three sub machine gun magazines, 90 rounds of t 56 ammunition two grenades, food items and sarongs into their custody.
