Panadura UC dissolved The People's Alliance controlled Panadura Urban Council was dissolved on Friday midnight by the Western Province Chief Minister Reginald Cooray. Meanwhile, on Friday night a team of officials of the Western Province Provincial Council visited the Panadura Urban Council and sealed off the main entrance of the council prohibiting the employees and councillors from entering the office building of the council. This act caused panic among the employees who came to
report for duty on Saturday morning. International Ozone Day The International Ozone Day falls on September 16 and various activities have been planned by 177 countries who have signed the Montreal Protocol, to commemorate this day. The theme for this year is Save our sky: Protect yourself: Protect the Ozone Layer. In Sri Lanka this day will be celebrated for the 7th time. The Ministry of Forestry and Environment as the focal point has planned a series of events to create public awareness about the Ozone Layer and the importance of preserving it, since the depletion of the Ozone Layer is causing great global concern. The main celebration will be held at the Nilwala Teachers Training Institute, Akuressa, Matara. This year marks a significant importance to Sri Lanka
with regards to the Montreal Protocol. The 13th Meeting of Parties (MOP) is scheduled to
be held at the BMICH in Colombo from October 15 to 19, 2001, thus marking a historic
milestone for the country in terms of United Nations and the global sphere. PM to open Drama School complex The new building complex of the drama school of the Tower Hall Foundation built at Talawatugoda at a cost of Rs. 1.2 million will be opened by Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayake at 10.00 am today, Director General, Tower Hall, Theatre Foundation, Ms. Indika P. Chandratilleke said. Ms. Chandratilleke said that this year the new drama school has recruited two batches of students together. About 50 new students will be trained at this school and at the moment there are about 30 students, both male and female under training. A large studio is available for drama training at this school and more facilities and equipment will be provided for this school shortly, she added. Jana Udana land distribution Fifty acres of land acquired from the plantations, will be distributed among the homeless and landless families in Kahawatte, Ellegewatte under the Jana Udana village programs shortly, the Minister of Health D. Girl Guide annual general meeting This year being the International Year for the Volunteers, the Girl Guides Association is making preparations to celebrate this event along with its Annual General Meeting.
