Mid-day meal for students in drought-hit areas next week

by Manjula Fernando

The Education Ministry is making expeditious arrangements to ensure that schoolchildren in drought-hit areas receive their free mid-day meal the next week.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told the Daily News yesterday that the Schools Unit of the Ministry is collecting data on the severely affected AGA divisions to identify the number of schools that would really need this assistance.

"The Ministry maintains a register of schools in each AGA division. We can finalise the number of schools which should receive assistance once the above data is collected," a Schools Unit official said.

A meeting of Schools Unit officials with Minister Premajayantha was scheduled for yesterday afternoon. They were due to discuss arrangements on acquiring and distributing drinking water and means of providing a nutritious meal for the students.

According to latest reports, out of the nine drought-hit districts Hambantota, Moneragala and Puttalam are the worst affected.
