Pool for the West Indies tour A 24-strong pool was picked from the Annual Inter-club tournament 2001 conducted by the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka who will go into training this month and the final 14 players will be named on November 15. The initial training will be by Rohan Fernando assisted by Vanessa (Bowen) de Silva who successfully captained the first World Cup team in 1997. A former Test cricketer will take on the team from November to face the visiting West Indies team who will play 3 One-Day Internationals and Five-Day Test. All matches will be played according to ICC rules as deemed by the International Women's Cricket Council. Sri Lanka is already a finalist for the Women's World Cup 2004 in South Africa. With an invitation to visit Pakistan in hand, Gwen Herat, President, WCASL will be leaving for UK to negotiate to tour England in place of Pakistan as she feels the Lankan girls are to strong for Pakistan and England would offer them more competitive cricket to face up to the World Cup. The West Indies who got a bashing at the hands of Sri Lankan girls at the World Cup 97 are a improved-team and high standard of cricket is expected. All girls in the Pool are expected to be present on 17-9-01 at SSC Grounds at 2 p.m. without fail. The Pool: Sudarshini Sivanathan, Chamani Seneviratne, Hiruka Fernando, Thanuja Ekanayake, D. N. H.
