Susanthika to skip 200m Olympic medallist Susanthika Jayasinghe will be seen in action for the first time in a meet outside Colombo after her record breaking feat in Sydney when she takes part at the National Sports Festival to be worked off at the Welagedera Stadium Kurunegala from September 11 to 15. Jayasinghe who is looking forward to win a record four athletic gold medals at next month's SAF Games in Islamabad, Pakistan, will only run in the 100 metres dash. She is unlikely to run in her pet event - 200 metres, the event which brought her fortune at the IAAF World championships in Athens in 1997 and at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Jayasinghe said she does not want to take a risk by doing a 200 metres on a grass track as an injury may effect her chances at the SAF Games. Meanwhile Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sriyani Kulawansa and Teheran Asian Games gold medallist W. Wimaladasa will light the traditional Olympic torch at the National Sports Festival. Deputy Director of Sports Dervin Perera said all arrangements have been finalised for the five day event hosted by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports . The cream of local sportsmen and sportswomen will be seen in action at the mega event, their last competition before next month's SAF Games. |
