Five extortionists caught

From M. G. A. Nasser - Our Eravur group correspondent

Valachchenai Police on Saturday took into custody five youth who were caught extorting funds on the pretext of handing them to the Armed Forces and for claiming that they are from the Sri Lanka Army.

These youth, who are from Polwatte in the Kurunegala District were arrested after fleecing the residents in Valachchenai and Meeravodai, Police said.

Though the amount of the collection of the five youth have not been disclosed yet, they have demanded that the minimum amount that residents of the area should give is Rs. 50 when some contributors have given Rs. 20, Police said.

They were arrested on a tip off by the residents of these areas.

Valachchenai OIC H. M. Piyasena is conducting investigations.
