'Government defeated UNPs constitutional conspiracy to grab power' Cooperative Development Minister H.B. Semasinghe said the Government could successfully defeat the constitutional conspiracy launched by the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to grab power. He was speaking at the inauguration of the new electricity schemes set up on a Rs. 6 million ADB grant at Kakulbadidigiliya and Samadhigama in the Anuradhapura district. He said national leaders like Ranil Wickremesinghe who should unite in this crisis situation was fighting for narrow political gains. "In ten times, the people voted for the PA Government they had no intention to offer the premiership to Ranil Wickremesinghe. No one has the right to appoint such a leader who has been by the majority of the people," as the Prime Minister. He said the UNP members at rural level have vehemently condemned the UNP's attempts to grab power through various conspiracies without seeking a people's mandate. Minister Semasinghe said the JVP who took weapons twice against social injustice have pledged their support to the Government. This collaboration with the JVP is a more pragmatic approach than joining the UNP which plunged the country into a precipice. He said: "The UNP's aim was to grab power by hook or crook and lead luxurious lives for several years. But the JVP pledged to cooperate with the Government. This is a great victory of the people as well as the 11th continuous defeat of the UNP in Sri Lankan political history." The Minister said that most of the time in Parliament was spent to increase the number of heads rather than finding solutions to the burning problems of the country. But all these crises did not happen automatically. These are well planned conspiracies of the UNP. "Now practical solutions have been found to all these burning issues. Once again a people's Government has been formed in collaboration with the JVP. Therefore all the poverty stricken families and the people in border villages will be happy about this people's victory," the Minister added. |
