Vinayagar Temple case put off

The inquiry in the case in which nine young men are charged with causing damage to the Katukele Sri Selva Vinayagar Temple was put off by the Kandy Magistrate, D.L.M. Seneviratne as three of the accused and witnesses were not present in court.

The nine suspects are K. Jayatissa, D. Pushpakumara, U.J. Ranjantilleke, S.M. Nelson, D. Samantha, S.M.A. Piyatilleke, G.A.M. Adhikari and Ananda Kumara,, all of Kandy.

All the accused are charged with unlawful assembly and being members of unlawful assembly causing damage to the Katukele Sri Selva Vinayagar Temple and its properties to the extent of Rs. 10 lakhs on January 25, 1998.

When the case was called except the 2nd, 3rd and 8th accused, all the other accused, who are on Rs. 10,000 cash bail each, appeared in court. Counsel for the accused informed court that the 2nd accused was sick and submitted a medical certificate to court.

Pavement hawkers arrested

One hundred and forty pavement hawkers who obstructed the public were arrested by a Police team attached to the Pettah Police on Thursday.

Later they were produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Mrs. Sarojani Kusala Weerawardena.

After pleading guilty to the charges the Judge imposed a fine of Rs. 400 each. Colombo Central Senior SP D.A. de Fonseka directed the investigations conducted by SP Gamini Seneviratne and assisted by Chief Inspector Mahanama Karunaratne.

Waterfalls running dry

Bopath Ella, Mapalana Ella, Goxing Ella and Beruwatte Falls, the four premier waterfalls in the Ratnapura district were in imminent danger of running dry, within the next two weeks if the drought continued, said Asitha Indika Weerawardene, the President ofthe Diya-Eli, Yowun Mithuro Sangamaya, to the Daily News.

If those four waterfalls dried up all recorded 90 waterfalls in the District would follow suit he added.

The people in the areas are warned to refrain from throwing even a cigarette-butt or a lighted match-stick into the wilderness as the likelihood of fire is almost 100% under the prevailing unprecedented drought conditions.

Common policy on transfers

A common policy on transfers of executive officers who complete five years service in the same Government Department or Local Government Institutions has been initiated by the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs and Administrative Reforms.

This transfer scheme which will come into force from January 1,2002 is also applicable to all executive officers in the Combined Service.

The proposal of transferring public officers from one institution to another after his/her five years service has been completed in the same place was brought with the intention of providing a better service to the general public in the country, Minister Dr. Richard Pathirana yesterday told the 'Daily News'.

"However this scheme is not applicable for excecutive officers at many Government institutions where the relevent Ministries and Provincial Councils are practising it at present.

Jayawardhanapura nurses on strike

The Sri Jayawardhanapura General Hospital nurses will go on strike today in protest against the failure of the Board of Management to grant their revised over-time payment.

"Although the hospital's management board had assured the nurses that their OT rates will be increased by 35 per cent several months ago, that promise has not yet been fulfilled, " President of the Public Services United Nurses Union (PSUNU) Muruttettuwe Ananda Thera told the 'Daily News' yesterday.

There are nearly 300 nurses attached to this hospital.

However, arrangements have been made to provide emergency healthcare to patients, the Thera said.
