Mid-day meal for students in drought hit areas

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

The Ministry of Education will provide a mid- day meal for students in the drought hit areas from next week, Minister of Education Susil Premjayanth told the Daily News yesterday.

"It is our duty to ensure that students in the drought hit areas stay healthy. Ministry officials have had extensive talks on the issue. We plan to provide nutritious food till the drought ends," Minister said.

"This will be finalised on Wednesday and launched next week in collaboration with Provincial Education Offices," Minister Premjayanth added.

The Ministry also plans to provide drinking water to all schools in these areas to prevent diseases transmitted by contaminated water.

The Ministry will conduct health camps in the schools, the Minister said.
